Rev. Hal Nilsson was pastor at Ascension from 1967 to 1976. During his ministry in San Diego, the music program expanded and a group called the Kinfolk was formed which was heralded throughout Synod. He led the congregation through a reassessment of land utilization which resulted ultimately in the retirement of the mortgage. He was instrumental in helping two young men to enter the ministry and developed a vibrant youth program.
He also developed a close relationship with Prince of Peace Lutheran of Allied Gardens resulting in several joint services. Under his leadership many Bethel Bible teachers were trained for in-depth study of the scriptures. He developed a strong and varied worship program incorporating drama, contemporary music and an appreciation for historic liturgy.
He served as Dean of the district and contributed to many Synod activities. Pastor Nilsson served during the turbulent and challenging years of the Vietnam War, the Hippie Movement and Watergate. Ordained in 1965, his first call was as mission developer in the Artesia-Cerrito of LA county. He remember his call as Ascension’s pastor especially because of the extraordinary support and encouragement which he received from everyone.
After leaving Ascension, he served Zion Lutheran, Salt Lake City, UT and later St. Luke Lutheran, Albuquerque, NM from which he retired in 2001. In active retirement, he serves as President of the New Mexico Conference of Churches.
